Student Visa Assessment Levels

Here you can work out what assessment level. The assessment level is dependent on the nationality on your passport and not where you are currently living.


Assessment Level 3 countries

Angola, Benin, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe*  


Assessment Level 2 countries

Botswana, South Africa, Zimbabwe* 

*Students from Zimbabwe studying in Australia toward a undergraduate, masters or doctorate degree will be assessed under assessment level 2 if you are applying under any other sector then you will assessed under assessment level 3.

All countries in the Sub Saharan Africa region that are not listed above are assessed at Assessment level 3. 

 
STUDENT VISA SUBCLASSES

  • Subclass 570 Independent ELICOS Sector
  • This is for students who will be undertaking ELICOS (English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students)
  • Subclass 571 Schools Sector
  • This subclass is for students who will be studying at a primary or secondary school
  • Subclass 572 Vocational education and training (VET) sector
  • For students who intend to study toward a Certificate I, II, III or IV, Diploma or Advanced Diploma
  • Subclass 573 Higher education Sector
  • This subclass includes Bachelor Degree or Graduate Diploma
  • Subclass 574 Masters/Doctorate Sector
  • For students intending to undertake a Masters or Doctorate Degree Programme
  • Subclass 575 Non-award Foundation/Other
  • This subclass includes non-award courses including foundation, bridging or other similar courses.
  • Subclass 576 AusAID or Defence sponsored sector
  • Students who have been awarded AusAID or Defence Scholarships


For example

If you hold a Kenyan passport and you are intending to study toward a Bachelor of Business, you will be assessed at Assessment Level 3 (for your nationality) and subclass 573 (for the type of course you will be studying).

If you hold a Zimbabwe passport and are studying toward a Masters of Business Administration, you will be assessed at Assessment Level 2 (for your nationality) and subclass 574 (for the type of course you will be studying)
